A Conversation with Balaangala

a green background with yellow circles, a wattle flower image, and the text: St Mark's The Gap presents: A Conversation with Balaangala Community Group. A Courageous Conversations Series. 5.30-7.30pm Sunday 18 October 2026.

Listening, learning and building connections between First Nations and non-First Nations people.

What does it really mean to build respectful relationships across cultures and histories?

The whole community are invited to join us for a relaxed conversation with members of Balaangala, a local community group who aim to creatively bring First Nations and non-First Nations people together through relationships, creativity, caring for Country and learning from one another.

You may know Balaangala through their annual Art Show, or from their native garden in Yoorala Street, The Gap. In this Courageous Conversations event, we'll hear how Balaangala began, what brings people together, what they've learned along the way, and what it means to build genuine relationships across cultures and histories.

We will share a light meal together on arrival, then settle into hearing from the Balaangala about listening, learning, allyship and finding ways to contribute — without needing to have all the answers. The conversation will be followed by sweets, tea and coffee, alongside the opportunity to engage with our guests to find out more.

There is no charge to attend, but we hope you'll help us support Balaangala. A suggested donation of $10 per person will go directly to Balaangala's Restoration Fund, which supports First Nations projects. Please give more if you're able — every contribution helps. Card and contactless donations will be available on the night, so no need to bring cash.

And if you'd like to continue your connection with Balaangala, their annual Art Show fundraiser returns to St Mark's Hall on the 14-15 November, with proceeds going to the Restoration Fund. Come along, enjoy the art, meet the community and support the work.
